Meet The Trainer

Sora Lenz

Sora’s lifelong passion for horses began with her aunt in Wyoming, who introduced her to the enchanting world of equines. Growing up amidst friends and instructors who shared her love, Sora experienced the joy of riding various horses. She dedicated herself to learning through lessons and horse leases, culminating in 2016 when she welcomed her beloved companion, Freya.

In 2020, Sora embarked on a new chapter in Grand Junction, pursuing a degree in elementary education at Colorado Mesa University. Driven by her deep connection to horses, she founded KDH to extend the magic she found in these majestic creatures to others, believing that everyone deserves a special equine friend in their lives.

Now rooted in Grand Junction, Sora and her four-legged companions eagerly look forward to meeting you and sharing the transformative power of the horse-human connection at KDH!

Meet the Horses

Freya

Since joining our family in December 2016, Freya, a spirited mustang from Rock Creek, Wyoming, has been an extraordinary presence. Captured in 2011 with only halter training, she embarked on a journey of learning and growth with Sora. Today, Freya stands as a testament to her resilience, showcasing her versatility in rodeos, drill teams, trail rides, roping, parades, camps, and as a patient lesson horse.

Freya’s role extends beyond her impressive skills; she has become a beloved teacher, patiently imparting the art of riding to individuals as young as two years old, and forming lasting connections with each new friend she encounters. Her genuine enthusiasm for sharing the joy of equestrian experiences is truly remarkable.

In her leisure moments, Freya indulges in her favorite pastimes – relishing almost any treat within reach, with apples being a particular favorite, enjoying mud baths before lessons, appreciating the soothing touch of ear scratches, or simply basking in the warmth of the sun. Freya eagerly anticipates meeting new friends, ready to continue her adventures with those who appreciate the charm of her spirited yet gentle nature!

Horse

Meet the barn’s standout personality, none other than Horse – yes, you read it correctly. A recent addition to our team in late 2021, Horse earned her name for its simplicity and memorable charm, providing a source of laughter for all who encounter her.

Originally a seasoned trail horse, Horse has seamlessly transitioned into the role of our lead trail guide. Her willingness to navigate mountains, traverse water, and tackle any challenge makes her the go-to companion for riders seeking adventure. Beyond the trails, Horse thrives on guiding students through new challenges in the arena, fostering growth and confidence along the way.

During her downtime, Horse shares the universal pleasures of napping and seeking out snacks, much like her equine counterparts. Notably, she takes her role as head food inspector seriously – any treat entering the pen undergoes her meticulous scrutiny. In the world of Horse, where laughter, learning, and tasty treats converge, every day brings a touch of whimsy and joy.

Claira

Claira just recently joined the KDH family of June 2023. Although tiny, she is mighty!  She is the horse who will give it her all whether it is on a trail or in the arena. Claiming her role has the head vacuum cleaner, Claira does a great job ensuring no food goes to waste.

In her free time, you can find Claira vacuuming up any spare pieces of hay from breakfast/dinner, acting as lead mare, invading your personal space for attention, and listening in on people’s conversations.

Jolene

With flaming locks of auburn hair, Jolene gracefully entered the KDH family in November 2023! Despite being the youngest in the herd, Jolene brings a vibrant energy and distinctive personality that enriches the collective spirit.

In her leisure moments, you’ll often find Jo luxuriating in the warmth of the sun, taking her naps with an unmatched dedication. Much like her equine companions, she shares the endearing habit of searching for unexpected treats in your pockets.

Beyond her charming antics, Jolene’s presence adds a new layer of dynamism to the KDH family dynamics. Her playful spirit and youthful exuberance infuse an extra touch of joy into the barn atmosphere. Jolene is eagerly looking forward to meeting you, ready to share the warmth of her personality and create memorable moments together!

In loving memory of Princess

Princess graced the Kickin’ Dust team since the summer of 2022, and much like Horse, her name perfectly suited her regal presence. When it came to snacks, Princess was the designated taste tester. Her philosophy? A treat every 30 seconds of ride time to keep the momentum going.

A seasoned adventurer, Princess was the “been there, done that” type of girl. From local rodeos to countless hours on the trails, she was a versatile partner. Princess proved to be an ideal match for beginners learning to ride, yet she could also carry you far for those ready to take the next step.

Apart from quality time with her people, Princess had a love for eating that surpassed even Claira’s, which says a lot. She had a particular fondness for the odd yellow weeds growing outside her pen, preferring them over fresh green hay. Notorious for her escapades, Princess would break out of the pen with one mission in mind – indulging in those tempting weeds. If ever there was such a thing as a pretty weed, picture Princess embodying it with her distinctive charm.
